- Kirinari, at Sylvania Heights, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales is
the name of the first hostel for Aboriginal students.
|

- Kirinari Sylvania was opened on National Aborigines Day 7 July 1967 by
the New South Wales Governor Sir Roden Cutler VC.
- The tiled mural on the front wall depicts Aboriginal art existent in the
Sutherland Shire

- During 1968 the hostel was extended and 22 students and apprentices were
in residence to begin the 1969 school year.
|
|

- During the seventies a third section was added to Kirinari Sylvania.
This wing doubled the capacity of the hostel.

- A returned serviceman and Honorary Rotarian, Herbert Stanley Groves was
a tireless worker for the rights of his people.
- The Bert Groves Wing at Kirinari Sylvania is named in his honour.

- The second Kirinari was opened at Garden Suburb, a southern suburb of
Newcastle.
- This hostel accommodates 13 students.

- Established in February 1963, Aboriginal Children’s Advancement Society
is managed by a Board of Directors.
- The Directors bring a wealth of knowledge of Aboriginal affairs and
customs.

- Ivan Simon PSM is the President of Aboriginal Children’s Advancement
Society. He is a Sutherland Shire resident and is prominent in
Aboriginal affairs.

- Chris Mumbulla was the first employee of ACAS. An ATSIC Councilor, her
contribution to the Society as a Director is invaluable.
